  2. Definition

    Codes denoting alcohol use, including diagnoses of alcoholism, poisoning by alcohol in its various forms, and where alcohol has been found to be the cause of other health conditions.

    ICD-10 defintion

    This definition is based on validated, published and comparable code lists (Rees et. al., 2022; DelPozo-Banos et. al., 2018; Kim et. al., 2017; NHS, 2018; NHS, 2019; Syed et. al., 2018; Walsh et. al., 2018) and reviewed by a clinician in the study team (Prof Ann John).

    Read codes definition

    This definition also includes alcohol-related symptoms, observations, medications, behaviours, referrals and contacts with other services. It contains prescriptions relevant to treatment for alcohol use disorder (disulfiram and acamprosate), as almost all recipients were found to have a history of alcohol use (Rees et. al., 2022); and excludes those used primarily for pain management. Codes requiring an associated value of units relating to alcohol consumption volumes are excluded, as these do not confidently denote alcohol use disorder on their own. We included codes denoting ongoing intervention/treatment (e.g., alcohol withdrawal assessment).

    SNOMED CT definition

    The SNOMED codes for alcohol use were developed by mapping the existing ICD-10 and Read code definitions and complementary SNOMED searches. Treatments using disulfiram administered with benzyl benzoates were excluded as these are indicated for other diseases. Observations on alcohol intake, including attitudes toward drinking, were not included unless they specified quantifiable values. Exceptions were codes that determined alcohol involvement due to level of intoxication. Alcohol users disorder identification test are not included unless a positive result is specified.

    Note: The SNOMED CT definition has not undergone validation yet.
