  3. Methodology

    This was created as a subset of the OpenSafely Chronic Respiratory Disease Codelist, through the following strategy:

    1. Select codes including terms "chronic obstructive", "emphysema" or "bronchitis.
    2. Clinical review to exclude codes that were not relevant. This included codes that indicated exception reporting and patients declining a certain intervention.
    3. Exclusion of patients with congenital or senile emphysema, as these can occur in patients without COPD.
    4. Exclusion of patients with history of COPD, as only current COPD will be used to define the study population.
