  2. Definition

This codelist was taken from OpenCodelists, created by OpenSAFELY. We recommend viewing this Phenotype on the OpenCodelist website to view the most recent version.

This is a list of generic codes which record the presence of a severe or profound learning disability, flagged as such in a patient's records separately to their underlying diagnosis.

  3. Methodology

The purpose of this codelist was to define whether people have a code which specifically records that they have a "severe or profound" learning disability, as part of ascertaining eligibility for COVID vaccination under current guidance (The Green Book 2021)

Candidate codes were identified from: - searching the PRIMIS COVID-19 vaccine eligibility codelist - codes which categorise learning disability as severe or profound which are used in the learning disability register (based on the mapping to CTV3 in the OpenSAFELY learning disability codelist 6 July 2020) - searching for "severe AND learning" OR "severe AND mental" OR "profound AND learning" OR "profound AND mental"

This codelist does not attempt to categorise according to the underlying diagnosis, and so may miss people with severe learning disability who have not had this flagged in their records separately from the recorded diagnosis.

The codes are prepared from CTV3 and expected to have been used in general practices in records of people with a learning disability. Some codes may no longer be in routine use. We are aware that some of the individual codes contained in this code list are offensive and upsetting. Although these terms are outdated we have chosen to still include them in the code list due to the historic nature of the data that is being analysed. Excluding these terms would reduce the completeness of the data and may mean that some people with a learning disability are not included in the analyses.
